Periodontitis is a disease that damages the soft tissue (gum) surrounding the teeth and attacks the bone that support the teeth. With periodontitis the foundation of your teeth is being attacked.

The first stages of periodontitis are normally asymptomatic and are not really noticed by patients. During your semi-annual checkup we look for signs of gingivitis and early signs of periodontitis.

With gum disease, the sooner you diagnose and treat the problem, the better the prognosis becomes. If left untreated, the bacteria that cause periodontitis can do more damage to the bone which can ultimately result in loss of teeth.

Periodontitis

“Notice any bleeding gums, bad breath or loos teeth?

“You don’t have to brush all your teeth, just the ones you want to keep”.

  • Poor dental hygiene is known to cause gum problems. But with periodontitis, sometimes there are other risk factors we must take in consideration. Lifestyle factors such as smoking, stress, obesities and unhealthy diet can also have an impact on the gum.

According to research genetics also play a part when it comes to developing periodontitis. Which explains why some people are more prone to periodontal disease.

Other diseases such as diabetes can increase your risk for developing periodontitis.

  • Periodontitis can also cause bad breath. You might feel embarrassed and grab quick fixes such as mint, gum or mouthwashes designed to fight bad breath. Unfortunately, these products work only temporary or not at all, because they treat the symptoms and not the real cause of the problem.

  • Diagnosis

We measure the pockets (space between the gum and your teeth), make x-rays if necessary and establish the personal risk factors.

We discuss the treatment plan according to your wishes and motivation. We especially focus on improving dental hygiene rituals, healthy diets and, if necessary, we would recommend to quit smoking.

  • Initial Treatment

Next, a cleaning phase will follow, where we will focus on deep cleaning the teeth (underneath the gum). Sometimes more than one cleaning sessions is necessary and this will be discussed with you beforehand.

During every cleaning session you will receive personalized cleaning advice. There will always be enough time to ensure all your questions are answered.

  • Post Treatment

Three months after the initial treatment we measure the pockets again to review and discuss the results. Additional cleaning sessions, motivation and adjustments of hygiene rituals might be necessary.

In severe cases of periodontitis additional gum surgery might be necessary.

  • After Care

After the periodontitis has been stabilized the period of aftercare starts.

Regular checkups and routine cleanings are needed to maintain gum health.

Good dental hygiene and motivation are essential.

We help you to maintain your new and healthy routines to avoid relapse of periodontal disease.
